Nutritional Nourishment in the Wilderness

“There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each person which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.” (Pascal)

“There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each person …” Outer space is a vacuum, completely empty. By severing their relationship with the Source of Life Adam and Eve created a spiritual vacuum in their hearts such that they died.

“… Which cannot be satisfied by any created thing…” Our natural modus operandi is to use anything to fill the vacuum. That’s what King Solomon did. Anything my eyes saw and wanted, I got for myself. (Ecclesiastes 2:10) He tried it all: education, pleasure, money, possessions, work, sex, and fame. Emptiness! [used 86 times]. Everything is empty! ” (Ecclesiastes 1:2) Obviously, created things didn’t fill the void.

“… Satisfied by only God the Creator …” God is Love! (1 John 4:8) As the outflow of His heart, God created the human spirit to be nourished by LOVE, that is, by Himself. “God made us: invented us as a man invents an engine. A car is made to run on petrol, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

“… Made known through Jesus Christ …” The full content of divine nature lives in Christ, in his humanity. (Colossians 2:9) Hence, Jesus is the LOVE of God in an authentic human being. Focus (Hebrews 12:2) on him. He is that for which our hearts hunger. So he declared: I am the Bread of Life.

In a wilderness of whatever type we discover that, like Solomon, the food with which we have gorged our hearts is devoid of nutritional value. It’s unable to sustain us in challenges that confront us. Covid should have taught us this!

After miraculously feeding 5000 in a wilderness
Jesus declared:
I am the Bread of Life.

Come every day to me, and you will never be hungry.”
(John 6:33-35)
