If you’re a follower of Jesus, what’s in your “Bucket”? By the time your earthly journey is finished, will you have discipled (my word) one person from birth to maturity? Given Jesus’ last command, is that not a critically important question for those who profess Jesus as Lord? Barna Research has determined that less than 25% of self-identified, American Christians will disciple one person in their lifetime. Undoubtedly you will be able to list a plethora of “spiritual activities” in which you are engaged that impact the Kingdom. I don’t disparage your investment! Nonetheless, based upon Jesus’ “marching orders“, are you keeping the main the main thing?
Perhaps you’ll resort to the most notable excuse: “Well, that was only meant for the disciples, the professional clergy … pastors, priests, and missionaries. And besides, I support them with prayer and finances!” First, common sense indicates this to be total nonsense! Imagine! After General Eisenhower was appointed as supreme commander of Allied forces he ordered that only officers would land on the beaches of Normandy. Get it? Wars are directed by officers but they are fought by the infantry!
However, the only reliable gauge is the biblical standard. So, here’s what Acts 8:1 states: “On that day the Jew religious leaders began to persecute the church in Jerusalem. So, ALL the believers left Jerusalem. ONLY THE APOSTLES STAYED! The believers went to different places in Judea and Samaria.” Note Jesus’ last prophetic word! “YOU will be my witnesses. YOU will tell people everywhere about me—in Jerusalem, in the rest of Judea, in Samaria, and in every part of the world.” (Acts 1:7-9) Who is the YOU?
I hope you’ll accept this Word of God! The apostles STAYED and the believers LEFT!
